Pinkerton Hot Springs

Pinkerton Hot Springs is not your typical hot spring. It is a unique site located near Durango, Colorado, on the side of the Million Dollar Highway. The minerals from the hot springs have created an unusual rock formation with a small pool to one side. The area is marked with a man-made rock pile that has grown colorful over time due to the water’s minerals. The water is 95 to 105 degrees Fahrenheit. The history of Pinkerton Hot Springs dates back to the 1800s when it was discovered by James Pinkerton, who turned it into a travel destination. The Pinkerton Ranch built a resort here that burned down, and its remains served as a speakeasy in the 1920s. Today, the Colorado Timberline Academy sits on the land.
