Penny Hot Springs
Penny Hot Springs is a natural hot springs pool that is free to use and situated on the Crystal River, located past Carbondale and about forty-five minutes away from Aspen. The surroundings of the hot springs consist of snow-capped peaks and canyons, which provide a relaxing experience after a long day of outdoor activities, such as fishing, climbing, hiking, or skiing. The springs are named in honor of Dan Penny, who managed a small hotel and bathhouse on the railroad line upstream of Avalanche Creek. The pool is partitioned off by large rocks to prevent the entry of cold water and can accommodate around ten people comfortably. The water temperature varies and can be regulated by adjusting the rock wall. Spring snowmelt can result in the hot springs getting flooded. The optimal time to visit is usually from summer through fall, even in winter. Clothing is mandatory, and the hot springs might be crowded during weekend nights.
