Winfield
Winfield, CO is a historic mining town situated in the San Isabel National Forest near Buena Vista. The town was established on 120 acres of land at the intersection of the north and south forks of Clear Creek. The town’s first cabin was built in 1861, and mining operations began in 1867. By 1890, Winfield had become a bustling town with a population of around 1500 and had several businesses and community amenities, including saloons, stores, hotels, a boarding house, a post office, a church, a school, a mill, a smelter, and a concentrator. However, mining ceased in Clear Creek Canyon in the early 1900s. Today, Winfield remains as a historic site with some original buildings, including a schoolhouse.
