Red Mountain Town, a mining camp in Colorado, was once a booming town with a population of up to 10,000 residents in the late 19th century. It was one of many mining camps built up and down Red Mountain Pass, with other noteworthy towns including Congress, Chatanooga, Guston, Ironton, and Albany. The town prospered due to the discovery of gold ore in the 1870s, but its decline followed that of the mining industry in the region. It is estimated that the region’s mines yielded around $30 million. Today, the National Belle Mine, a jail, and a few other ruins are the only remnants of the once-great town.
