Originally named after the prospector who discovered iron ore, the town of Haumann became known as Old Orient as miners arrived in the 1870s. The Colorado Fuel & Iron company leased Haumann’s claims in 1881, renaming the mine Orient and leading to the town’s bustling growth until the early 1920s when surface ore veins depleted. However, CF&I built a new company town below the mine to revive the industry, which peaked with 400 residents. The mine eventually closed in 1932, leading to the abandonment of New Orient. CF&I stripped the buildings and a massive cave-in created the Glory Hole at some point afterward.
