Caribou, Colorado, was once a thriving mining town located about an hour from Denver. The town was established in the early 1870s for workers of the Caribou silver mine. At its peak, it had 3,000 residents, 100 houses, a three-story hotel, and three saloons. An estimated 8 million dollars was produced from the mine until 1884. Eventually the silver started to run out and that started its decline. Then in 1905 a major fire destroyed much of the town and it never really recovered from that. There has been a few short revivals of the town, but none have proved worthwhile like the silver boom in the late 1800’s. Today, just some stone ruins remain.
