Crestone Colorado: A Spiritual Mecca

Crestone Colorado may be the most unique town in Colorado. Nestled up against the Sangre De Cristo mountain range sits this tiny town that has been been called the most spiritual town in the country hosting over 20 religious sites of varying ideologies.

History
Like most Colorado mountain towns, Crestone has roots in mining. Unfortunately for the town, the gold ore that was found in the area was of poor quality which led to a failed boom.

The spiritual history of Crestone doesn’t really start until the late 1970’s. Maurice Strong and Hanne Marstrand owned many plots of land in the town limits and during a visit, were inspired by native locals to create a spiritual center. Part of this process started when they began gifting plots of land to religious organizations. This led many groups to arrive in Crestone and start their religious centers. Varying religions and ideologies are represented here including Christianity, Buddhism, Hinduism, and new age beliefs.
